about

A beat tape without beats (mostly), Synth Tests is a document of my exploration of the Novation MiniNova synthesizer. It is a laboratory-like experiment with tone and texture, made with the intention of creating more space between notes and finding dynamic range / emotional resonance almost solely through the orchestration of audio effects rather than technical dexterity or poetic storytelling. The tracks are presented in the order they were recorded (between April and August 2017), hopefully demonstrating the evolution of the experiment.

Every note of Synth Tests was played by me (Andrew Swafford).

Almost every sound on the album was made with the MiniNova, with very few exceptions. There are also MIDI drums on Test 6, electric guitar on Test 10, and field recordings (made in Knoxville, TN) on Tests 8-10.

Credit where credit is due: Test 3 includes a melody from the Joan Baez song "Three Horses." Additionally, Test 1 contains a slightly-altered stanza from the poem "To Nobodaddy" by William Blake (whose painting "Newton" features on the album cover). Test 10 contains a stanza from "So That You Will Hear Me" by Pablo Neruda (which in many ways encapsulates the philosophy of the album).
