I took my love, I took it down Climbed a mountain and I turned around And I saw my reflection in the snow covered hills 'Til the landslide brought me down Oh, mirror in the sky, what is love? Can the child within my heart rise above? Can I sail through the changin' ocean tides? Can I handle the seasons of my life? Well, I've been 'fraid of changin' 'Cause I've built my life around you But time makes you bolder Even children get older And I'm gettin' older, too Well, I've been 'fraid of changin' 'Cause I've built my life around you But time makes you bolder Even children get older And I'm gettin' older, too I'm gettin' older, too Ah, take my love, take it down Oh, climb a mountain and turn around And if you see my reflection in the snow covered hills Well, the landslide will bring it down And if you see my reflection in the snow covered hills Well, the landslide will bring it down Oh, the landslide will bring it down

Sixes hang in the door What kind of shit to ignore I've cut the cloth (Ooo, hard line circle) How to know who to write How to know who can cull up all the questions We know that I'm right, cause To clean out a night I fell in love I heard about it I heard about it I heard about it No And so it's not in your clasp What's the function or the task Well, I'd stun and I'd stammer Help me reach the hammer (For then what will I ask) That's a pair of them docks Mooring out two separate lochs Ain't that some kind of quandary Wandry Take me into your palms What is left when unhungry I learned about it I learned about it I've learned about it No I'm still standing in Still standing in the need of the prayer The need of prayer No, I don't know the path Or what kind of pith I've amassed Long lines of questions Lessons Lessons What do you lose to concede? And yes it's hard to believe When 'em sold from your sleeve Just come off of your knees Please, please, please I can admit to conceal No, that's not how that's supposed to feel Oh, no (It's not for broader appeal) Fuck the fashion of it, dear I've laughed about it I've laughed about it I've laughed about it No

about

An ambient album haunted by pop music. A digital album haunted by analog formats. My first album, Synth Tests, used one synthesizer almost exclusively and sequenced the tracks in order of their creation; Welcome and Unwelcome Spirits utilizes much more electric guitar, effects pedals, and intentional track sequencing to create an experience that is less cumulative and more dualistic. Every track intends to capture some type of lingering presence, be it wanted or unwanted: as a new homeowner, I'm thinking a lot about how new spaces are constructed out of past spaces; as a politically-minded public servant, I'm thinking a lot about how new discourses are manifestations of past discourses. I wish we could exorcise the unwelcome spirits of the past, but they're here--for now, at least.

released October 31, 2018

Every note of Welcome and Unwelcome Spirits was played by me (Andrew Swafford).

The album is constructed primarily with sounds from my Novation MiniNova synthesizer. However, MIDI drums can be heard on tracks 1, 3, and 10; electric guitar can be heard on tracks 1, 3, 7, and 10; field recordings made in Crossville and Knoxville can be heard on tracks 2 and 7, respectively.

Credit where credit is due: the album is bookended by cover songs--the first by Fleetwood Mac and the last by Bon Iver. Tracks 5 and 6 were originally written for a short film by Deja Lytle called "Deja in Wonderland," which can be found on YouTube. Track 7 takes its title from the poem "Strange Fruit" written by Abel Meeropol and popularized by Billie Holiday.
